Genius WP-8060U and Linux

Submitted by jean-paul on Sun, 05/21/2017 - 16:12

So I've got this graphics tablet. A Genius WP-8060U. I got it at an electronics clearinghouse for I think $30 a number of years ago, which because I was using Linux at the time, the purchase was a bit of a gamble. I found the Wizardpen project online and signed up as a tester, so I was able to get it working most of the time. That project died, and support for those drivers was picked up at some point by the Digimend project.

Taking Notes in Linux for Students

Submitted by jean-paul on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 23:26

Taking notes is an important part of school life, especially in college and university where the content is often presented at a faster pace than in earlier levels. In the upper levels, computers are often used by students in the classroom, so I'm going to try out a few different options available to me on Ubuntu Linux 13.04. Users of other releases or distributions (such as Fedora, openSuse, Arch) will likely have to modify the install instructions based on their setup.

Drupal Set up Checklist

Here is my basic procedure for setting up a new Drupal site. I'm using Drupal 7.## and my server configuration may vary from yours, so these might not be appropriate instructions for everyone. Also, don't use the links. They're just examples!

Coming Soon - London Ontario Linux User's Group - lolug.ca

Submitted by jean-paul on Wed, 06/05/2013 - 11:28

I've just purchased lolug.ca! I will be setting up a community site, in the hopes that I can help to stir up interest in the community. When I first started using Linux, I had a free domain at londonlinux.ath.cx, but it wasn't a good domain name. I also didn't do much with it, so despite having people sign up, it languished and eventually I shut it down.

There has been a Google Group for lolug for years, but it seems to now be inactive, and the "website" for lolug which was at Vox (free service) is now gone, as is Vox.

About Ubuntu Operating System (What is Ubuntu?)

So you've heard about Ubuntu, and you'd like to know more? You've come to the right place. If you're looking for a tutorial, or a getting started guide, I would suggest refining your search, as there are plenty of places with that kind of information. This bit is only going to try to answer the question, "What is Ubuntu?".

First, a bit of background.

That's Enough Unity -- XFCE Time!

Submitted by jean-paul on Mon, 09/24/2012 - 22:35

This may end up as an article, if I can find something interesting to write about. Basically, I've given up on Unity. I liked it for a while, and it did dual-head (with Nvidia binary blob) well enough for what I was doing. Now that I'm back at school, I can't deal with the blank white windows after changing focus. It was tolerable for a little while, when I could just resize the active window to redraw it.

10 Reasons To Switch To Linux

Submitted by jean-paul on Tue, 06/26/2012 - 13:37

I apologize to everyone in advance. I have been negligent, and there is no excuse. As a rabid Linux advocate, I was supposed to have an article on my site explaining why everyone should use Linux. I suppose it's just laziness, or that after nearly a decade of trying to convert everyone, I no longer care what OS you use. I now know that no matter how logical and strong my arguments may be, the majority of people either don't care or don't understand, and will therefore only be susceptible to the peripheral route to persuasion.

Google Drive

Submitted by jean-paul on Wed, 04/25/2012 - 17:24

I finally got access to Google Drive! I don't have any of the desktop apps because I use Linux, but it's a start. I am going to try to use it with my blog, as a way to serve images quicker than I can from my server.

[edit] It didn't work. I had a broken image embed for a while, but it looked bad. It's gone now, but I'll try to make it work again later. If you've had success serving images from Google Drive to your blog, let me know how you did it in the comments below.
