3 Gratitudes - March 5, 2014

Submitted by jean-paul on Wed, 03/05/2014 - 00:00

Here are the three things that I'm grateful for today!

  1. The opportunity to go to school every day.
  2. That it's almost spring, and I will be able to resume gardening soon!
  3. That tomorrow's exam isn't until the afternoon. I don't like morning exams.

That's all for the day! I hope you enjoy reading my gratitudes, and are inspired to write some of your own.

The Failure of Google Adsense

Submitted by jean-paul on Fri, 10/11/2013 - 09:05

Is this your first time here? If you're an average reader here, you either found this site through a link or a specific search, and are a new reader. For those who have been here before, you might notice that there are no longer any ads. I was using adsense, and while I certainly don't have a high volume of traffic (< 1,000 visits/month), I thought that I was earning about $1.00 a month. Barely worth even thinking about, but it was something measurable that helped to motivate me to continue writing and improving my site.

Flowering Chinese Evergreen

Submitted by jean-paul on Tue, 05/28/2013 - 14:59

One of my Chinese Evergreen plants is flowering right now. The other one has a partially opened flower, and I hope that they overlap! I'd like to get them to fruit, as I have never seen them. I have had these plants (there was 1, there are now 3) for about 4 years, and I have only seen two flowers before this one.

Here is a photo of the opened flower:

4 Tbsp Cocoa powder

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup peanut butter

2 Tbsp vanilla

2 pinches salt

3 1/2 cups oats

Summer Reading - April

Submitted by jean-paul on Sat, 04/27/2013 - 23:25

And, we're off! For the first summer in quite a while, my vision is good enough to read for pleasure. I just wish that I had realized earlier how much I need glasses.

Leaf Propagation of a Prayer Plant - Maranta leuconeura

Submitted by jean-paul on Wed, 03/20/2013 - 23:48

I cut a leaf off of a healthy prayer plant with a razorblade. I cut within an eighth of an inch of the node, on an angle parallel to the remaining stem. I scored the bottom 0.5" of stem and dipped it in rooting gel.

In a 3" pot, I poked a 2" deep hole with a pencil. I put the cutting in the hole and tamped the soil down lightly to secure the cutting.

I don't know that this method will work, as I didn't include an entire node. I will update this post when either the leaf dies, or a new leaf appears.

Who Reads Blogs?

This post isn't an expose. It contains no meaningful statistics.

When I was younger, I had an old computer that I used to keep a private journal, like Doogie Howser. Unlike Doogie, however, I had a lot more to say than a 1 line witticism. Let's face it. I was angsty. I would write about pretty girls and what I did on the weekend.

Tiny Bugs in DWC Reservoir

Submitted by jean-paul on Fri, 01/18/2013 - 01:14

I was topping up the water and lowering the pH this evening, and I took my usual look inside the reservoir with a flashlight. At first it looked like there was a bit of detritus floating on the top of the water. I don't think that's abnormal, considering that there is constant movement in the water due to the air stones at the bottom of the tank. Well tonight, I noticed a bit of movement, and took a look with a brighter light.

I have pests!

DWC Sweet Basil - 150w HPS

Submitted by jean-paul on Sun, 01/13/2013 - 16:36

I built a DWC hydroponic system in order to grow some sweet basil! I used a plastic bin that I purchased specifically for this project. The only problem that I had with it was that the plastic sides were translucent and the top was black. I spray-painted the sides of the bin black to make it opaque, and then I spray-painted the sides and top of the bin white so that it would reflect light. It needed to be white so that the water inside the bin stays cool under the bright light.

No Boxee Box Webserver Access

Submitted by jean-paul on Thu, 11/08/2012 - 00:14

I'm trying to get the Boxee Box that is connected to an HD television to respond to web requests. In the network settings of the Boxee, under the "Servers" tab, there are options for a webserver. I presume this is for controlling the Boxee over the network, although this is my first time trying to access it, so I'm not actually sure. When I try to access it, I get a nearly blank page with "Access Error: Site or Page Not Found" and "Cannot open URL" on it.
